Artist Statement
“The things I notice:
Women gossiping. Electricity poles shrinking as they recede. Family groups in parks. Dunes of sand covered in grass behind an orange life-saving ring. A woman touching a man’s arm. Houses on a hill, the road leading up to them. A grandfather walking holding his granddaughter’s hand. An old gate and cattle in the low sun. Men looking at women, women at men, or other people. A narrow path between walls going down into a valley. Couples making private yet momentous declarations. Lines in the land fading into the distance.

I sketch and photograph what catches my eye. Later I colour in pencil sketches, or take sketches and/or photos and work them into a larger paintings or drawings. I get deliciously caught up in composition, colours, pigment, light, forms, and yes, figures get a little abstracted and features get blurred, but a scene is recreated, transformed, re-suggested, made open to interpretation.
The beauty is in the ordinary. The ordinary becomes a story. No story ever really ends.”
